Fishing with sinkers: Running sinker rigs

Using running sinker rigs is an simple and effective way of fishing with sinkers. Running sinkers allow a fish to take the bait and move away without feeling the weight of the sinker. When fishing with sinkers it is important to only use as much weight as necessary, the more natural the presentation the better the likely hood of success.

Rig 1

Shown is the simplest of all running sinker rigs with the sinker running all of the way down to the hook.
Although simple and effective, this rig has limitations. Firstly, the sinker can't be too large because it may crush any of the bait threaded up the line above the hook.
Secondly, no provision can be made for using a heavier leader to the hook, a desiable feature when seeking large fish like mulloway and big snapper.

Rig 2

Shown is a more complex running sinker rif featuring 2 hooks on a separate leader one sliding along the leader and one tied on the end. At the other end of the leader is a solid metal rinf to which the hook leader is tied, the knot shown in both cases is a blood knot.

Rig 3

Shown is the ezy rig which slides along the line like a running sinker. It allows a bomb sinker, which would normally be tied on the end of the line, to be used as a running sinker. It consists of a plastic barrel, which slides along the line, to which is attached a metal snap for changing as required.
